Web Design Trends for 2014 Part 2
By

website design

In part one of our Web Design Trends for 2014 blog we covered the ever growing importance of having responsive design, the ever prevalent social media badges, and the emergence of retina display support being coded into some websites. In part two, we will cover three more web design trends that are making waves on the web.

Large Photos- Cameras are now capable of taking pictures at ridiculously high resolutions, and websites are taking advantage of this by creating gorgeous vistas and exciting scenery that will take up your whole screen when you first land on a page. It’s always been a great idea to make your business come alive through photos, but now it is easier than ever before, and everyone is doing it. Humans are visual creatures and are much more likely to gravitate towards a large, beautiful, photo, than a great wall of text. Photos can instill emotions and ideas in people that you can’t quite get in any other way. It’s a great way for you to portray your business in a different light. This trend is one you won’t want to skimp on, because it can greatly affect the user’s decision to stay on your web page versus clicking the back button and searching for something more interesting.

Fixed Headers- This feature has been around for quite a few years now, but is becoming more of a mainstay in design because it’s much more convenient to always have the main menu visible on the screen. No matter where you are on the page, you can click to somewhere else, so no need to scroll back to the top of the page. Fixed headers also look pretty cool, and are a great way to always have your logo on display. For functionality reasons alone, we would recommend considering one.

Blogs- Blogs have been around for many years now, and it is safe to say that they have been trending for quite a while. Recently, with Google’s new hummingbird algorithm, there is a renewed reason why everyone should consider having a blog on their site, regardless of your business. Google likes sites that have nice, original, blocks of text being added to their sites on a regular basis. They like great content over keyword stuffing, and they like to see that websites are being updated with new content. Blogs are an excellent and easy way to do this. At regular intervals, say once a week, or every other week, someone in your company should write two to four paragraphs about something related to your industry. This is a great way to organically optimize for search engines, because terms related to your business will automatically be associated through your website without the need to stick industry terms anywhere and everywhere on your site for no reason. So for no other reason than to improve your ranking with Google, consider adding a blog to your site. It might be worth it.

So there is part two of our top picks for web design trends in 2014. Check back next week for the third and final installment on new design trends for 2014. We’ve saved some of the most interesting for last, and one of them is something that every business website should do. So don’t miss out, check back next week!
