Responsive Design Series Part 1 – What is responsive design?

In our company, we were doing responsive design websites before it became a necessity or well known by most. At the time we were using JavaScript but now the code (thank you CSS3) has evolved so much than responsive design has truly become the coolest and biggest change in website design in the past ten years.

What is responsive design?

It is the readjustment of a website design, layout, elements and text to conform to a specific screen size. For a long time (and many older sites still do), viewing a site on a smart phone or tablet would either hide part of the page or reduce it into a tiny size which was impossible to read.

Responsive design is done through coding typically using media query and CSS3. You can create a very unique look for each of your pages for very specific screen sizes.

Computer screens for desktop come in all sizes and shapes, some being more landscape than others. The same is true for smart phones (aka phones that can connect to the Internet). Some phones do not do well with certain code type like Flash so make sure that your site is tested on multiple phone types and operational systems. Phones within the same brand will also have different screen sizes. Look at the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, talk about a larger screen size for this popular cellular phone.

Tablets have exploded in popularity and it is difficult to find a family in the US who does not have at least one tablet like an iPad. They are easy to use and quickly connect to the Internet. It is hard not to love them.

But responsive design is just readjusting the layout, sometimes it means showing different images and text, completely removing elements when a mobile device. Next week we will discuss in more depth when it is a good option to hide text or images on mobile devices compared to a website desktop version.

So stay tune!
