Choosing powerful colors for your website

The title of this post “Choosing powerful colors for your website” could be taken the wrong way. By “powerful” we do not mean strong, vibrant and aggressive colors. We mean colors which work great for your target audience, your company’s message and industry type. A powerful color can be subtle and light while still doing “its” job.

1 ½ year ago we wrote a blog post about the meaning of colors and that information is still true today. [To view this prior post click here]

Step one of good color selections for a website

It starts with your logo. If you have a strong and established logo, the colors of the website should support and compliment your logo. This does not mean the colors have to be identical. We, at BWC, like to recommend 1 or 2 top colors with different variations of these chosen colors. The top color is typically closer if not identical to the logo’s main color and is used for important titles, perhaps footer background color and more. The secondary color (possibly taken from the logo as well) is used for other website elements that are also important: Subtitles, sub sections, etc.

Step two

Place your logo in an image editor (we recommend Photoshop) and add three boxes of color next to it. If you do not have an editor in your computer, you can use Microsoft Word.

– Box 1 should match exactly the logo’s primary color.

– Box 2 should pick up on a second color that might be in the logo. If your logo is only one color (like ours), then selects a colors that works well with it.

– Box 3 should be a different shade of Box 1, typically lighter in density that could be used in background colors for strategic buttons or sections on your website.

Step three

Take a fresh look at the palette you just created. Remember that colors should evoke a specific feeling for your website visitors but you have to know what that feeling should be. So answer this question:

What feeling do you want your visitors to have when arriving on your website?

– Confidence and accuracy?

– Warm and loving?

– Fun and active?

As mentioned many times before, you should not be expected to understand every website element, but you should be informed enough to demand it from your web designer.
