Dynamic storytelling in website design

Dynamic storytelling has continued to grow in popularity this year and we anticipate the trend to flourish in 2016. Regardless of your business, you have a story to tell. Perhaps it is a process showing your services from before to after. Or perhaps it is the story of your products, how they are made, how they are used and the benefits they provide to those who buy them. Either way there is a possibility for storytelling which can help prospective clientele better visualize  what you have to offer.

What does it take to develop a great visual storytelling?

  1. A good outline of the story from begin to end. Think of it as a story board just as movie makers use prior to filming. Remember that it needs to be interesting otherwise the viewer won’t follow the entire story.
  2. Use interesting and compelling images, photographs or graphics that can trigger a positive feeling in the viewer.
  3. Supporting text should be succint and easy to read at a glance. It should also be styled in a way that complements the overall visual of the dynamic storytelling.
  4. There needs to be movement that takes the website visitor from one frame to the next, guiding him or her from the beginning of the story to the end of it.
  5. It needs to be short enough as Internet users have less and less patience. The story should move quickly from one idea to the next in an easy flow. Again point #1 (creating a strong story board) is extremely important.
  6. Using a Parallax effect is a great way to move the story along. It can go horizontally, vertically, or both. That adds to the dynamic effect of the storytelling.
  7. You can choose for the story to be moving on its own without any action needs on the part of the viewer or you can choose to have the viewer control the movement. That decision should be based on a good understanding of your target audience. Some types of consumers like to just watch while others like to participate.
  8. Good dynamic storytelling no longer requires pop up boxes and multiple pages. The story is best told on the same page while scrolling  right or down.
  9. Remember responsive design and make sure the movement of the story works well on tablets and smart phones.
  10. Don’t make it too complicated unless your audience is extremely tech savvy. Keep it simple and entertaining while conveying the exact message you want to share with your online audience.
