Cool fonts for your website

Typography for websites (aka fonts) has come a long way. Less than 10 years ago we used to have only a half dozen fonts to choose from which we called “web safe fonts”. The most popular ones were Times New Roman, Georgia, and Helvetica. But this is no longer the case.

Now a site owner can ask his web master to use any fonts of his choices. The font files can be embedded into the code of your website just the same way a font file can be saved in your computer. The process is very similar.

Another method is to link to Google Fonts which now has a huge library of fonts available. In facts they have hundreds of font choices and are continually adding new ones. Just like many Google products the service is free of charge. Click here to view all fonts now available >>

Saying this, it does not mean that every font is a good option for you.

1) You should select 1 to 3 font types maximum for your website:

– A primary font for most of the text which is easy to read.

– A secondary font for special titles.

– A third font for call to actions.

2) You can use your main font but display it in different variations by changing its thickness, letter spacing, using a serif or non-serif version and color. If you do this, we suggest limiting your font types to 2 for your website.

3) It is always recommended that the primary font you use on your website is the same one you use in your email signature, documents, printed material and any marketing tool you may use. This solidifies your branding.

Even if you have a small company, you should have branding standards for yourself and employees. These standards should be writer and typography should be part of it.

Think big, treat your business as it was Starbucks, create systems that everyone follows, establish strong branding standards, and suddenly your company will appear bigger and more professional.
