Pinterest style card website design

You may not use or be active on Pinterest but you have heard of them. Their card block layout has set a new website design trend that is continuing to grow in 2016. Mimicking the design of successful social media platforms for website design is not new. Think of Timeline from Facebook; since it was released it became a format used on countless websites for their “timeline/company history” page.

We think the card design works even better as a landing page where your visitors can see at a glance an image with some teaser text and have the ability to click on the boxed area to redirect themselves to a page of interest. It can be used for your blog roll (aka where all of your blog posts show), your services landing page, your articles landing page and more.

Why use card design for your website

=1= Organization and Efficiency:

Card layout or design can be a great modular look for a website which shares lots articles, stories, posts, images, videos or other type of content that can be placed in boxes. It helps organized a lengthy or busy page into blocks. It makes it easier for visitors to quickly view and consider each card section.

Everything is shown in the order you want to present to your website visitors so you can almost control the thought process of your visitors.

The block elements do not have to be as busy as Pinterest’s cards. You can streamline them. Some can be text only, image only or even solid colors to separate sections.

They are also great for calls-to-action. Remember to not overdo it with those calls-to-action. Only a few strategically placed cards should have them.

=2= Responsive Design:

Block elements like those in card website design are easily adjusted for mobile responsive design. They are by their nature easy to read on a smaller screen size like a smart phone or tablet. Just like other web elements, you can choose to display them in a different order on a mobile device or even hide some of the cards if they are not as important as others.

=3= Visual Appeal:

If done right, a card web design can be very visually appealing. It can look pretty and well thought giving the sense to your visitors that you have put care into your design of your website.

If you are selling products, they can be a fabulous way to push new items for sale or special promotional products. Each product card can be linked directly to a shopping cart page where the visitor can make his purchase.

There are two styles of card website designs:

  • When the cards are even in size and proportions. This gives it a very clean and organized look.
  • When the cards are of different height and/or width. This gives it a cool and unique look.

Either style can be done well. Just make sure that the overall look of the page is not cluttered. If you feel this is happening to your card design, using white background outside of the cards and also use white space around objects.

Finally even though you may primarily use images, try to have a color theme of some sort as it will tie in all of the cards together.
